The 2007 Blue Christmas tree bears
ribbons in remembrance of loved ones.
A Service of
Remembrance and Hope
Wednesday, December 10
5:30 pm

As Christmas approaches, we all encounter a constant stream of messages about the happiness of the holidays: joyous celebrations and gift-giving and spending time with family and friends. But for many people, these messages are painful reminders of what they will be missing this Christmas.

Broken relationships, unemployment or financial uncertainty, health issues, isolation, the loss of a spouse, parent, child, or the absence of a dear family pet – all of these can contribute to being alone and feeling “blue” in the midst of a world that is focused on celebration.

When we hurt at Christmastime, it can help if we have a way to acknowledge our sadness and concern, and be assured that we are not alone. Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston offers such a way with its annual Blue Christmas Service.

On Wednesday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m., everyone is invited to join in prayers, readings and music to remind us that God is present for those who mourn and struggle, and that God’s word comes to shine light into darkness. Candles are lit as prayers of remembrance and hope are offered, and all are invited to place small blue ribbons on a special Blue Christmas tree in memory of loved ones.

The Grace Handbell Choir and the young choristers of the St. Nicholas Choir will provide music. Refreshments will be offered afterward in the parish hall.
